Chapter 20
GARRETT
He almost cringed when she said those words. As far as he knew, Rafe would be at her surprise party. Maybe he should call Gladysâ house and tell Rafe not to come. As it stood, he needed to slip away and call Gladys to ask if she or Megan could bring clothes and makeup to the party location.
Garrett knew there had been a chance she would be late to her own party, but after last night, he thought she needed to get away. Her emotional health was more important than arriving on time.
Now the party stood a chance to be a huge disaster with her and Rafe having it out. He had his own conflicting feelings. Suppressing his attraction to her became more difficult with each passing moment. Garrett had never met anyone like Christie. Sheâd been through so much, and yet she seemed determined to keep on going. To let it all run off her and not get mired down in the muck life kept throwing in her direction.
Her indomitable spirit, personality and innocence were a powerful combination. An irresistible one. He didnât blame Rafe for being drawn to her, but the young man should have been more upfront before they became so intimate. Not to mention, the lâil punk had rented a hotel for them. No doubt with the intention of being her first.
That stuck in his craw, especially considering the fact heâs still in love with Blake. He knew. Heâd known since nearly day one. Rafe needed someone to talk to and he didn't feel like his friends or RC would understand. Rafe was still young and would make a shit ton of mistakes in his life. He just wished this mistake hadnât hurt Christie.
âIâm going to use the facilities,â he said, putting his napkin down. âIâll be back in a few. If dinner comes, start without me.
Without forethought, he leaned over and brushed his lips along her temple before he walked away from the table.
Christie
She felt lonely as soon as he left. Christie enjoyed his company. Garrett was thoughtful, kind, caring and compassionate. Whatâs not to like? Did she mention handsome? Maybe handsome was a poor word choice; hot. Holy, fucking hell, heâs hot.
Rafe hurt her badly. More from wanting to take her virginity while he was still in love with another woman, than him loving another woman. Of course, that hurt, too. Did she love Rafe? Sheâd never been in love before, but it hurt to breathe thinking of his betrayal. That hurt most of all. Too many people she cared about had betrayed her. Sheâd trusted Rafe.
Dinner came a few minutes after he left. Christie dug her spoon into the hot, cheesy grits enjoying a few bites before Garrett came back to the table.
âWhat do you think?â
âThe grits are dope.â
He laughed, sitting down across from before grabbing a fat juicy shrimp and plopping it in his mouth.
âOh, this is good. Should we come back next weekend?â
âYes!â
They finished the dinner, enjoying each other's company. Christie learned more about Garrettâs likes in movies, music and even food.
